Tracking plate and tube when remnants float around the shop

Simple Industry does not track individual remnants. It keeps one count per part, with a reason on every change, and records material lots as a record of what arrived.

Why remnants get lost

A remnant is what is left of a sheet or a bar after a job. It sits on a rack or a cart, and nobody writes down its size or where it came from. A piece that can be traced to a heat number is only traceable while it stays marked.

A shop either gives each piece its own record and mark, or counts the stock it has by the unit it buys and corrects that count when the rack and the paper disagree.

One number per part, and a reason for each change

Inventory holds one number per part. A raw material has two units: the one you count in, such as sheets of plate, and the one production takes off in, such as square inches. Inventory screens lead with the stock unit and show both.

A part nobody has counted shows a dash. Zero means someone looked and the shelf was empty. When you change a count you choose a reason, so the history says why the number moved. A count walk lets you go along the shelves and enter counts one part after another.

A material lot is a receipt

A lot is one batch as it arrived: vendor, heat number, PO, spec, country of origin and the date. Vendor and heat number are the two required fields. The mill test report is uploaded onto the lot, and a job points at the lot it ran on.

What it does not do

A lot has no quantity. It does not say how much of the batch is left, and lots never split the on-hand number. There is no record for a single offcut, no size per piece and no rack location for one.

If a piece has to be traced on its own, mark it and keep that record outside the count.
