What a traveler is and when a small shop needs one

A traveler is the sheet that follows a job through its operations, with a sign-off at each step. A small shop needs one when someone will ask who did what to a part, and when.

What a traveler holds

A traveler lists the operations a job goes through in order: cut, form, deburr, inspect, outside plate. Whoever does an operation signs it with their name and the time.

A shop that makes a simple part in one step can run on a job ticket. A traveler earns its keep when a job has several steps, when part of it goes out to another shop, or when a customer or an auditor asks for proof of who did the work.

A routing becomes a traveler on a job

You build a routing once for a sequence you run more than once. When a job has not started, you apply the routing and its steps are copied onto the job. Each step waits for a signature.

The first Sign in a browser session asks who is signing, from your shop’s roster. After that, each step is one tap. The step shows the name and the time.

The copy is the record of what was done. Editing the routing later does not change a job that already ran.

What the sign-offs connect to

A job points at the material lot it ran on, so the traveler sits beside the heat number, the customer and the PO. The jobs list carries a packet column that counts how many of a job’s checks have evidence on file.

The jobs list, each row carrying a packet badge reading 1 of 5 or 3 of 8.
The packet badge counts what a job holds against what applies to it.

A certificate of conformance prints the heat number and the supplier from the lot. It does not print the traveler’s operations or signers.

Where it stops

A routing does not schedule work or load a machine. The machine on a step only records which station ran it.

You can apply a routing only while the job has no operations yet. Once the steps are on a job, they cannot be added, edited or removed on that screen. Clearing a sign-off is allowed and cannot be undone, and signing again stamps a new time.

Tell us which jobs need a sign-off at each step. We will set up a time to meet, in person or online.
